Mamaia

Mamaia

Mamaia is situated at the north limit of Constanta. Up north there are Mamaia Village and Navodari. Mamaia starts at the northern limit of Constanta city, at about 500 m from Delfinariu and 300 m from Tomis Nord. You can reach Mamaia on foot or by bus (40, 23), minibuses (301, 302, 305) and by tram (101). Keep in mind that Mamaia is one of the biggest resorts in Romania, being 8 km long.

The first buildings in Mamaia appeared in 1906 and were some wooden cabins with a small balcony and a footbridge unto the sea.

The inauguration took place on the 22nd of August 1906, the plans belonging to the landscape architect E. Recont. To make it easier for the tourists to get to Mamaia a railway was built between Constanta railway station and the resort.

These buildings represented the centre of the tourist attractions until their destruction in a fire in 1920. Soon after the end of the First World War the resort started developing again, when the royal family decided to build a summer residence in Mamaia, the present Castle Club.

In 1925 it was built The Cazino and in 1934 the first hotel, which was actually a villa. The first real hotel was Rex Hotel (1936) and it was only in 1957 that Bucharest Hotel (the present IAKI Hotel) was built.

The growth of the resort took place in two stages: from 1959 to 1965 in the south part, starting with Park Hotel, and from 1982 to 1985 in the north part.
